Medical Lab Technologist

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, Life Sciences, or related field. Two (2) years of medical laboratory experience. NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. Experience in Hematology and Microbiology.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional years (3+) of medical laboratory experience. Two (2) years of experience with microbiology, hematology, immunology and microscopy (including gynecology wet mounts and parasitology). ASCP Certification. Phlebotomy experience.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Medical Lab Technologist reports directly to the Medical Director and is responsible for the proper performance, review and evaluation of all clinical laboratory procedures. The incumbent assumes all responsibility for the results of tests performed by laboratory personnel. They will maintain specific knowledge of safe laboratory practices as endorsed by the New York State Department of Health and Occupational Safety and Health Administration and will conduct themselves in a manner consistent with those practices to ensure the safety of all lab personnel. They will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills, while adhering to a high standard of excellence. The Medical Lab Technologist will interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, physicians, support staff, peers and other members of the campus community.

Independently prepare blood smears, stain smears, and perform manual CBC differentials to classify white cells, red cells and platelet formation. Perform wet mounts, KOH preps, occult blood, mononucleosis testing. Report findings on appropriate lab requisitions and scan reports into patients' Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Utilizes accession, maintenance and quality control logs.

Independently perform vein punctures and finger sticks, verifying the patient's name matches the name on requisition and using proper personal protective equipment. Explains venipuncture or finger stick procedure to patients and discusses their insurance and cost of tests with them. Is familiar with individual specimen requirements and prepares specimens for reference labs. Assists with patients who become ill or faint in the lab. Adhere to all Student Health Services departmental policies and protocols.

Independently operate, calibrate, and maintain various laboratory equipment including a Coulter Counter, centrifuge and glucometer. Working autonomously, plate specimens for microbiological cultures on appropriate media and incubates. Isolate and identify bacteria, performing sensitivities by the Kriby-Bauer method, when indicated. Prepare and read gram stains.

Act as technical advisor to the medical staff and participate in the evaluation of all new lab procedures including Point of Care tests such as urinalysis, urine pregnancy, glucose, rapid strep, rapid flu and COVID-19 tests. Trains and supervises student lab assistants in phlebotomy and specimen processing. Performs NYS DOH proficiency testing in bacteriology, immunology and hematology. Maintains the work area and supplies in a clean, safe and orderly manner. Inventories and maintains all lab supplies. Prepares labels and properly stores regulated medical waste for collection. Prepares monthly lab statistics. Adheres to lab policies and procedures, NYS DOH standards, OSHA, PECSH and HIPAA regulations.

Actively participate in staff meetings and seek out continued professional development opportunities.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Evening and weekend work may be required at times.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.
